Cough is described in Ayurveda as Kasa, which manifests as symptoms of many underlying disorders & also as an independent disease. Sometimes cough may be associated with flu or breathing difficulties. In Kasa or cough, Vata dosha is obstructed & the normal movement of dosha is reversed. Symptoms in individuals vary according to dosha involvement, the strength of the patient, place, time, climate, digestive capacity, etc.
Ayurvedic cure for cough & Ayurveda perspective
Ayurveda, the science of life has many proven potent remedies for managing cough & other respiratory diseases. These medicines are herbal formulations that not only cure the disease but prevent the future onset of any related illnesses. During the intake of medicines, a strict diet, as well as routine, has to be followed for fast results.
Another important thing to be noted is that any Ayurveda medicines should be consumed only under the supervision of an expert physician. Only trained doctors can identify the exact cause & suggest fast-acting medicines.
The dosha predominance indicates some specific symptoms. When vata dosha is dominant, there will be dry cough with very little or no sputum. If there is pitta predominance there is a yellowish discharge of sputum. When Kapha is involved, there is an excess of sputum & more mucoid. In some types of cough, there is blood-stained sputum as well as purulent sputum also. The treatment is designed strictly according to dosha involvement.
If vata is the culprit then Internal oleation therapies like drinking of milk/soup made with pulses are to be done. Externally, oleation followed by fomentation is recommended. This will expel the sputum very easily. This will alleviate the associated complaints also.
If pitta dosha is involved, then medicated powders like Vasa churna (Adathoda) with honey is advised. Kashaya like Kantakaryadi Kashaya is also advised. Drakshadi Leha is also advised to relieve the fatigue associated with cough. In severe cases & by considering the strength of the patient, purgation or defecation therapy is carried out with appropriate medicines.
If the Kapha dosha is predominant, then Sitopaladi churna is advised. In some extreme cases, Nasya or instilling medications through the nose are also done.
Herbs that fight cough
This is a very powerful cough remedy for decades. Rock sugar liquefies the sputum & releases from our body. This can be consumed just like candy. It purifies the oral cavity & throat. This has amazing results in the treatment of cough in children. This can be added as a sweetener to replace the normal sugar.
The herb contains gingerol which is anti-inflammatory & anti-microbial in action. If the cough is associated with flue or throat pain, this is an effective remedy. Ginger juice can be consumed with honey. Ginger tea can be made by boiling ginger pieces in water for 10 minutes. Then adding some jaggery & crushed peppercorns can add more to its action. This drink can be taken once in a day, preferably in the early morning hours
This is another potent anti-inflammatory herb. This root powder can be used to gargle to relieve any cough or throat problems. This is a respiratory tonic & rejuvenating herb.
The leaves contain menthol which is an expectorant or relieves congestion & expels the sputum. The boiled vapors from leaves can be inhaled for preventing any respiratory problems.
The holy basil or tulsi
This is well-known as well as an excellent remedy for allergic seasonal cough. The leaves can be boiled & can be taken daily to relieve cough. It contains active ingredients like Ursolic acid & Eugenol. The leave juice can be taken along with honey also. It is anti-inflammatory & anti-microbial in action
It contains Curcumin, which is an anti-allergic & immune modulator. Turmeric powder can be taken along with honey is very effective in managing respiratory allergic ailments including allergic cold, asthma, etc. It also protects the body against external infectious agents & maintains longevity.
An easy cure for cough
Inhale the steam of saltwater- The steam can separate the secretions from the channels of the body & helps in easy expulsion. It also gives a sense of feeling light. It boosts the circulation also
Saltwater gargling is one of the best-recommended methods for a speedy recovery. Salt is anti-microbial as well as anti-inflammatory.
Intermittent drinking of lukewarm water is recommended to liquefy the mucous secretions & reduce the chest congestions. It also soothes the throat.
Avoid fatty or oily foods & exposure to dust, cold weather or other allergens. Excessive oil or coldness blocks the body channels. It causes the mucous to concentrate & remain inside the tract. This will cause breathing problems along with the cough.
Avoiding tobacco smoking is very vital as smoking leads to long episodes of cough followed by systemic complications.
Is cough dangerous?
If the cough is not relieved by taking medications, then detailed examinations have to be performed to find any primary diseases. Such situations should be strictly monitored. Because many complicating ailments manifest primarily as a simple cough.
